Franke Family Newspage 2008

Here are a few pics I chose that Uncle Eric sent from the family's get together on the 4th of July. They joined Linda and John at their place on Legend Lake, which is a great spot for water sports.

They enjoyed boating and tubing and, of course, went out for dinner.

Rik and fam also went white-water rafting on the Wolf River nearby. Rik and Paige in one raft; Wendy and Erik in another. During the run, Rik and Paige's raft got stuck on a rock and they had to get out to release it. Paige barely got back in and the raft propelled off without Rik.

When Wendy and little Erik's raft came by, they were unable to rescue Rik. He finally pushed off and let the rapids carry him downstream where he found Paige waiting for him. Getting back into the raft was a challenge too - and funny, but Rik surely had an adventure. Great photos, Linda, however you managed to get them!

Eric's Japanese Business Card Story:
I just discovered some old business cards from the days I was working and doing business for my firm in Japan. On the backside of the card I had a translation to Japanese which of-course was not understandable to me but hopefully it was to our customers.

Supposedly all the strange curlicues on the backside of the card conveyed the same information in Japanese. If this is true or not I do not know but if it doesn't I sure got gypped.

The only thing on the backside that I recognize are the numbers since I guess we must use the same protocol in order to do business.

It just occurred to me that the Japanese children have to learn perhaps hundreds of those curlicues in school. But to be able to participate in the rest of the world I imagine they also have to learn our form of script. And to think that our kids have the audacity to complain about their schoolwork!

When I get my Chinese carry-out, the order taker scribbles similar curlicues on the order pad and to my amazement I always seem to get what I ordered. Which isn't always true at Mickey D's.

Rik and Family

Photos from the beach - Cancun '08 - added to the gallery below. Unfortunately, Uncle Eric had to stay home and recouperate from his gall bladder surgery. Paige took and sent him photos from their vacation. They sure had fun!

Wendy sent the Franke Family Fun Facts from her 2007 custom-made holiday card:

  • Grandpa Franke treated us to our annual vacation in Cancun in January! We were joined by Wendy’s friend Kathy & her son Jesse as well as Linda & John, Rik’s sister-in-law & her husband.
  • Rik broke free from his desk job to work for the local news paper as a sports website editor & rejoined the world of radio with an evening music show and is also broadcasting high school hockey games!
  • Wendy & Paige visited family in North Carolina this summer.
  • Nana Moore (Wendy’s Mom) spent the summer in Wisconsin with us!
  • In July we enjoyed a trip “home” to Chicago where Paige was flower girl for Cousin Sue’s wedding.
  • We enjoyed “hours” of boating on the great Mississippi!
  • Paige turned 11 & started Junior high!
  • Erik turned 5 & is in pre-kindergarten!
  • Grandpa Franke took his annual trip to Sweden to visit family & celebrated his 61st High School Class Reunion.

    Nice recap, Wendy - Thanks!

    Some of the older news:
Erik Anders Franke turned 5 in early December and WE HAVE PICTURES!

Erik has really grown into a handsome young man (already)! He may be shaving soon. I think he looks just like Rik (before he turned 30). A lot of Grandma Betty can be seen in them both. There is a new photo of Paige too. The photos are all added to the gallery below.

    Hot Links to Rik Online

    Radio Station
    Rik's Voice's Site
Rik couldn't stay away from Radio Jockin' and is now at ClassicRock100.1. Ah, my kind of music!

On his Voices Site (www.rikster.voices.com) we can hear samples of his voice work....he writes, voices and produces commerials (spots), PSA's (public service announcements), and promotions for organizations and businesses from his studio in the house. (I searched "Franke" and found his profile.)

Soon Rik will be producing video and starting his own hockey broadcasting website with his new Mac!

    Well, GO Rik!

Wendy has worked for the LaCrosse Salvation Army for some time where she is a Director of Development. That website is Bells2ring.org. Hmm, there are those "bells" again...

Little Erik is a pre-schooler now, energetic and funny. He keeps both Wendy and Rik on their toes.

Paige is 11 - Oct.1 - HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PAIGE! Cute, too. Her "savethepaige" myspace page is restricted so only her "friends" can see the content. I guess we would need to create our own myspace page and then ask to be her "friend" before we would be able read her page. Good feature!

The photos include when they took Paige out to celebrate her 11th birthday. She is a very adventurous connoisseur and chose a Japanese restaurant for her outing and they all enjoyed that.
