Remembering Ginger with Love

Ginger was one CUTE little girl, the actual Baby Bell, and spoiled by her 4 older sisters.

She was also a lovely and MODERN young woman. She settled out west and raised her family there. I remember her picture on a phone book as a telephone operator. She had a sweet demeanor and a cool head for customer service work.

These next three were taken in 1987. She joined sisters and brothers-in-law in Maui that year.

These were taken before her new curlie hairstyle.

Many of Ginger's friends and work associates attended the memorial service. The photos and story are courtesy of Eric.

On September 20, 2000 a Memorial Service for Ginger was held at a funeral home in Cupertino, California. Ruth, Betty and I were there to represent the family and friends from back east. On a center table decorated with a garland of roses, assorted flowers and greens was a framed photo of Ginger taken at her high school graduation. On each side of the photo was a candelabra with a blue candle. Also displayed on this table were composites of photos from various stages of Ginger's life, going back to her early childhood. On another table were photos of her children and grandchildren. As the friends and family were arriving, a young lady, friend of the family, played selections on a harp. We estimate that forty to fifty people attended.

At 1:00 PM the service began with lighting of the two candles next to Ginger's photo. Opening words were spoken by a minister of Tina's faith and this was followed by an emotional eulogy by daughter Tina. Those attending were then invited to speak and to share their memories of Ginger. Almost everyone stepped up to the podium and many beautiful and moving words were expressed. The management and co-workers from her company, including many from the factory, spoke emotionally about her always wonderful, happy attitude and her valuable contribution to the organization.

Several young friends that the children had brought into their home through the years tearfully expressed a deep loss. Many had looked up to Ginger as a mother who was always there to give them a helping hand.

As a conclusion of the service the two candles were extinguished and everyone left with heavy hearts. But at the same time they were very grateful for having known this grand lady.

Relevent update: It has been learned that the Coroner's report indicated that Ginger's heart was in very poor condition. Although no one has been able to definitely determine the cause of her death, it can obviously be assumed that perhaps she suffered heart failure while driving along the freeway. This may then have caused her to swerve across the three lanes of traffic as was reported by the police. The severe crash that followed would in itself have been fatal. We sincerely hope that the heart failure speculation is correct and that Ginger consequently suffered a minimum amount of pain.
